LONDON'S MILLBANK GALLERY
In 1892, the Millbank Penitentiary was chosen as the site for the new National Gallery of British Art, which would be directed by the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square. The prison, which served as a departure point for convicts sent to Australia, was demolished in 1890. The architect for the new gallery was Sidney R.J. Smith. His design is the core structure we see today, with a grand porticoed entranceway and a central dome resembling a temple. The statue of Britannia atop the pediment at the Millbank entrance emphasized the gallery's function as a showcase for British art. The gallery first opened its doors to the public in 1897, displaying 245 works by British artists dating back to 1790 in eight rooms.
GALLERY EXPANSION
The Millbank site has undergone seven major building extensions since its inception. The Millbank site more than doubled in size in its first 15 years, thanks to the addition of seven rooms designed by architect W.H. Romaine-Walker and funded by arts and antique dealer J.J. (Sir Joseph) Duveen to house the Turner Bequest. By 1917, the gallery's mandate had shifted. It was charged with overseeing the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present, as well as international modern and contemporary art. The new Modern Foreign Galleries, funded by Joseph Duveen's son, Lord Duveen, were designed by Romaine-Walker once more. These first opened in 1926, and a year later, Rex Whistler's murals were unveiled in the restaurant.
THE TATE GALLERY
The gallery officially adopted the name Tate Gallery, which it had been popularly known since its inception, in 1932. The new Duveen Sculpture Galleries opened in 1937. These two 300-foot-long barrel-vaulted galleries, funded by Lord Duveen and designed by John Russell Pope, Romaine-Walker, and Gilbert Jenkins, were the first public galleries in England designed specifically for the display of sculpture.
By this point, electric lighting had been installed in all of the rooms, allowing the gallery to remain open until 5 p.m. regardless of the weather. In 1955, the Tate Gallery became completely independent of the National Gallery, and plans for an extension to increase its exhibition space began. Richard Llewelyn-Davies designed a major extension in the northeast corner, which opened in 1979. The gallery took over the adjacent disused military hospital the same year, allowing for the construction of the new Clore Gallery, designed by Sir James Stirling and funded by the Clore Foundation. It was completed in 1987 and received a Royal Institute of British Architects award the following year.
